What’s Up with the SIII?

Samsung’s newest addition is truly beautiful, and probably the best smart phone on the market currently. It’s sleek design and it’s massively fast processor make it a beast of a phone, capable of doing anything, anywhere. In comparison to the Galaxy Note, it has a few distinct advantages. The blue tooth support is significantly newer (it runs version 4.0 rather than the Galaxy Note’s 3.0 system). If you use hands-free, or transfer data a lot, you’ll definitely notice the difference. Data transfer is faster, and typically you can expect blue-tooth to drain less of your battery power using the newer system. The screen PPI is also slightly better, but not by much. 305 PPI on the Note compared to 284 PPI, which gives you about ten per cent cleaner and crisper picture quality. And, of course, the S III is smaller, lighter and thinner than the Note, but that may not necessarily be an advantage…

What’s Up with the Galaxy Note?

The Note is more like a tablet. In fact, it was designed to be a middle ground between a phone and a tablet, which is where most of its strengths lie. It does have higher screen resolution, which is to be expected from a phone with a bigger screen, running at around ten per cent higher res than the S III. But all its other advantages lie in its size. The Galaxy Note’s screen is an incredible thirty per cent bigger than the S III’s, coming in at 5.3 inches, which is massive. Obviously, this is a huge advantage for some people, and may be what makes the final decision here…

Which to Go For?

The Galaxy Note is big. Really big. In fact, it may be uncomfortably big for those of us who are used to carrying our phones around in our pockets. The Note barely even looks like a phone anymore, and is vaguely reminiscent of a mini iPad. For some, this isn’t a problem. And if you like to use your phone for watching movies, videos or internet browsing, you really can’t do better than the Note.

The size of the screen plus the screen resolution makes the note a luxurious experience for web surfing, with little need to re-size screens so that you can actually read them. On the other hand, portability is a bit of an issue. Given how incredibly similar the specs are on both these devices are, what it comes down to  is whether or not you’re willing to carry around a mini tablet. As phones, the S III and Galaxy Note are practically identical. But one fits comfortably in your top pocket, whilst the other doesn’t. Solving the question of portability will tell you which phone you want to buy.
