How to Connect to a Local Server Within Your Office or Organization

Now a days, each and every organization maintain a server to which the employees of the organization has access. Through this server it is easy to maintain documents and files of the organization. Each and every employee of the organization may have access to the server. They can copy or use a file from the server or they may have also the permission to to create a folder and upload something to the server. This kind of local server is very user friendly and this kind of server can be set up in any computer chosen by the organization.

The reason why I have chosen this topic today is because when a new employee who does not have any previous experience of job or is not familiar with any kind of working environment, may not know how to access one server from his computer. He or she may also hesitate to ask his colleague about this thing.   So, the fir thing the person will do is to try to find out the solution through searching over the web. But in the web, I did not find any real easy way through which the person can get help from that material. That is why I am writing this article.

How to Access a Local Server in Your Organization from Your Windows Computer:

Suppose you are using one computer which runs in Windows operating system. Your superior just instructed you in an email that you need to download one file from the companies server and then need to modify that document (may be one excel file) and then need to upload it again in the server. He has also mentioned that the server address is 192.74.254.1 and he has created one user name, the user name is example and the password is example1. Now, you do not know how to connect to the server from your computer. The solution is below:

From the above image, you can see that the windows file system. In the above, you will also be able to see the “Address Bar”, just type the IP address of the server with two back slash in front like \\192.74.254.1 and if you server needs any username or password then give that user name and password or otherwise you server will get connected just after writing \\192.74.254.1 and pressing “enter”. Now, you can copy any file from the server and can paste it in your own machine in any folder. You will also be able to copy and paste any document or any folder to the server if your administrator provides you the facility. Just be noted that, if you close the window then again you need to connect to the server by repeating the same procedure.

How to Connect to a Linux Samba Server of Your Organization from Your Linux or Ubuntu Installed Computer:

For a Linux or Ubuntu installed PC, follow the below instructions:

At first open you file system, and then go to the bar and then put your mouse on “File” tab and then you will get one option in the drop down named “Connect to server”

and if you click on that you will get the above window. In the blank tab you need to provide the server address or server name but please remember that before that you need to type smb:// and then the server address.

Now, click on “Connect” and you will get connected to the Linux server and if any windows comes and asks for your user name and password, just provide that and you will get connected to the server and browse your desired file.
