Hence, I thought, I should share some tips with my readers regarding how they can save some bucks on their internet or electricity bills. This is very important to choose the cheap and best power company in New Zealand. Because from cooking to water heating, you do everything using the electricity. If you can choose the electricity company wisely, you will be able to save a lot monthly. When I had first arrived in New Zealand, I was not aware of all these tips and tricks. So, I choose one power company randomly and had to pay the price. There are quite a good number of Power companies in New Zealand. I had also changed 3 companies so far and found Genesis Energy as the best one. I had used Meridian energy, Genesis and Mercury and then changed back to Genesis.
What is the Trick to Cut Your Electricity Bill in New Zealand?
Well, only choosing the power company is not enough to save bills in New Zealand. You will have to think about some other matters as well.

Trick 1: Some of the power companies in New Zealand offer Night Meter rates, which means you get a special rate during night time. Suppose your electricity rate during day time is 33 cents per kWh but if the company offer night meter rates, the rate will be very cheap may be almost half of the rate that you are paying during day time. The time varies in North Island and South Island. In North Island the night rate is bit higher and is for less number of hours (from 11pm to 6am). On the other hand, in South Island, the rate is cheaper than North Island and for longer period (from 9pm to 7am).
So, if you are a consumer of a company who provides night meter rates, you are on the winning side. Cause then you can do your laundry during the night time (trust me if you close the door and turn the washing machine on, this is not noisy at all). Additionally, you do not need to turn on your Hot water cylinder whole day, you can just turn it on during the night time and you can enjoy hot water during day time. Additionally, over the weekend, during night time, you can do the vacuum. Additionally, if you are in South Island, which is a bit colder than North, where you need to turn on the heat pump quite often, the night meter can really help cause after 9 pm you can enjoy the night rate. Yay!
There is a one time fee to set up the night meter but you can recover the investment easily and enjoy the low rates.
I am currently with Genesis. The reason I have chose Genesis is that they have Night Meter rate, they have free power shout (they give you free power hours during those time there is no charge for power) additionally when I had joined them they had given me $300 of free power credits for a 24 month term. That was a perfect win-win situation for me. You can have a look at other companies but I believe they are the best.

This is easy to find out which company is giving your best rates. Just go to your current electricity bill and you will find out the rates below:
- Find out the cost of Rate/unit – this is per unit cost. This varies from company to company.
- Daily Fixed rate – there is a fixed day cost. This varies from company to company. You pay this daily cost on top of your electricity bill.
- Check the night rate if this is available to the company.
- Check if the company is going to give you any free credits when you join them.
- Check if the company provides some free power shout over the month.
