The Moore’s law states that “The total number of transistor in a microprocessor continues to double in every 18 months.” If we calculate in this way then on the year from 2020 to 2030 the number of transistor on a microprocessor will be equal to the number of atoms in that microprocessor.The quantum computer is a step towards this vision and mission.
Some of you may have heard of “quantum physics” but i am not going to describe you “quantum physics” toady.I have very little idea about this hard rock ‘quantum physics’! What i am going to discuss or write about is “quantum computer”, which has the quantum property of physics in it.
The Basic Concept of Quantum Computer:
Generally, we know that in the digital computers, the bits are encoded in two binary forms – one and zero.But the interesting thing in quantum computer is that the quantum property of bits of matter allows the bit of computer to be in two state simultaneously.This property of having bits in 1 and 0 condition simultaneously have made the quantum computer fast by considering all the possible combinations of bits and manipulating them.

In a digital computer the memory is made up of bits but in quantum computer the memory is made up of Qbits. The interesting thing is that one Qbit can represent as zero, a one or either any superposition of one or zero.Quantum computers in this will have the power of atoms and molecules to perform its operation in a large-scale.
Novel Prize’2012 On Physics and Quantum Computing:
In this year the Novel Prize on Physics is based on the crucial step of quantum computing.The persons who are awarded with the highest academic award towards humanity are Serge Haroche and David J. Wineland. They have independently developed methods of measuring and manipulating individual particles while preserving their quantum mechanical nature.That was previously seemed as unattainable.
Their contribution will be a great advantage towards the path of quantum computing.This could also show the ways of measuring time with a hundred times greater precision than is possible using atomic clocks.
Quantum Computer is in which state?:
Though it is said that the quantum computing is in its infantry stage and there is a lot to do in this field but practical observations show that there are some companies in the world who are claiming that they are already producing “Quantum Computer”.One Canadian company named “D-WAVE” is producing quantum computer.
They have one Quantum Computing processor which they call it as “The D-Wave One System” is a high performing computing system which is designed for industrial problems faced by Fortune 500 companies.The processor is 128-qbit processor and housed in a 10 square meter shielded room.I.B.M is also interested in this area of quantum computing.
Though D-Wave is telling that they have already invented the mythical computer but some research and analysis on their product shows that their quantum computer is not still up to the mark and the performance of their device is slower than the conventional one.
Paul Benioff, a physicist who pioneered quantum computing at Argonne National Laboratory, in Illinois, notes that even the best prototypes can’t keep more than 10 qubits in entangled states for long. “Because of this I am very skeptical of D-Wave’s claims that it has produced a 128-qubit quantum computer,” he says, adding that talk of reaching 10 000 qubits at this point is “advertising hype.” – source :IEEE Spectrum
But D-Wave is also having some good news from their side.They have press release in their website stating that “Harvard Researchers Use D-Wave Quantum Computer to Fold Proteins” where they have stated that the Harvard researchers has agreed to use it as a Quantum computer.Source:D-Wave Press Release
But from the data statistics of different research lab and from the comments of scientists in this field this can be predicted that we do not need to wait for a long time to watch this epic come true.Quantum computer will not be a fiction anymore within no time!
