Let’s face it, our laptops contain some of the most sensitive data for both work and personal use. And for most of us, the thought of losing our laptop is well, rather frightening. Not only does it contain our most private documents and photos, but also our bank codes, passwords, the list goes on. While there are plenty of precautions you can do ahead of time to help prevent theft, like marking our property with ID tags or an engraving, here are some quick steps to take should your laptop ever become stolen:
File a Police Report:
This may seem obvious, however a lot of people don’t file a report on missing property. While some believe law enforcement cannot do anything, your stolen computer hardware is actually entered into a national database. Therefore, if someone tries to sell your laptop there is a good chance it will be detected.
Inform Local Repair and Pawnshops:
Stop by local repair and pawnshops in your area to report your missing laptop. Be sure to give them your serial numbers and any identifiable features, like stickers, scratches or cover. The most reputable pawnshops will check with the local authorities before purchasing used laptops.
Contact Your Insurance Provider:
Immediately contact your insurance provider on their policy regarding stolen property. Many insurance policies for homeowners and some renters will cover stolen computer hardware, even if it wasn’t stolen from your home. If your laptop was company property, it will most likely be covered by your company’s insurance policy. Again, filing a police report is crucial, as most insurance agencies will require a copy.
Spread The World:
In today’s Internet driven society, you have more opportunity then ever before to spread the word about your missing laptop. Get on the social networks to let your friends, family and colleagues that your laptop is missing. And if you can afford to do so, try posting a reward for your laptop’s safe return.
Remain Vigilant:
Whatever you do, do not give up. It is very important to remain proactive. Many thieves will attempt to sell your laptop online because it’s harder to trace. Therefore, you should keep a close eye on websites like Craigslist and eBay. Also, pay close attention to the local paper or community bulletin boards. You never know when your laptop could randomly show up…and if it does, you want to be available to claim it.
