This means happy new year in Bengali. People who are from Bangladesh and West Bengal (India), usually observe this occasion. The first day of the Bengali New Year is known as Pohela Boishakh. “Pohela” means first and “Boishakh” is the first month of the Bengali New Year. People usually greet themselves, saying, Shuvo Noboborsho on Pohela Boishakh. To track the Bengali New Year, you can remember the date 14th April which is the Bengali New Year. This time it is the 1421th Bengali Year.

How this Occasion is Observed?

Bengali people observe this occasion with a lot of pleasure. As the time is during the summer, the temperature is high and to escape from the scorching rays of the sun, they choose one old Banyan tree and gather under the tree from the very early morning. There is a special kind of dish to celebrate this occasion of Bengali New Year. The dish that most of the Bengali families prefer to eat on this very occasion is “Panta-Ilish”. Panta is a kind of rice with water. At first the rice is prepared and then water is put in it. This dish is very healthy during summer time as it keeps the stomach cool. Ilish is the national fish of Bangladesh. This panta is served with Ilish Fry, Green Chili and Onion. This dish is very special.
