Google talk is a very handy tool or messenger from Google. Through this messenger you will be able to communicate with people who are online in either in Google talk or in Gmail. You will also get notification from GMAIL if you get any email in your Gmail address. So, in this way you will be able to know about your gmail inbox very quickly and while using other programs.

That is why I was missing Gtalk when I switched from Windows to Ubuntu Linux. At least I wanted a kind of messenger which will allow me to communicate with my gmail contacts. While searching for this kind of tool I have found one and this is named as “Empathy Internet Messaging”. Using this messenger, you will be able to set up your gmail account in this messenger. You can open it as a messenger and you will be able to see who are online and you can chat with your online contacts. So, this is the best possible replacement of your Gtalk in windows.

Please follow the instructions below to install the software in your Ubuntu Linux PC:

1. At first open your Linux terminal and the keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Alt+T and then type or copy the below command: (While doing so, it will ask for your computer password. Provide that to allow the installation.)

$ sudo sh -c ‘echo “deb http://dl.google.com/linux/talkplugin/deb/ stable main” >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-talkplugin.list’

2. To download and install the key you need to type the below command:

$wget -q -O – https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo apt-key add

3. Then update the make list by using the below command:

$sudo apt-get update

4. Finally, if the previous stages are fine, just type the below command and install the plugin finally.
