Desktop PCs had for a long time been considered as a necessity in home and office settings. But now dwindling sales have questioned whether they still have their place in today’s diverse tech world. Laptops were the first gadgets that reduced the popularity of desktop PCs by offering the same capabilities in a mobile package. While they were initially expensive to acquire, they have now become more affordable, and still outperform desktop PCs on many ends.

A New Threat:

Now there is a new threat to these traditional computers, more so desktop PCs. Enjoying enormous processing power and intuitive functionality, tablets are quickly taking over, and not in a modest way. While they pale in comparison in terms of size, tablets are able to flawlessly perform most routine computing tasks. With their large screens, greater portability and multimedia capabilities, they have gained preference far and wide. The availability of accessories such as keyboards means they can meet some office needs. This, versatility, is another point in their favor. With the world today inclining even more greatly towards mobile technology, one feels that the future of these heavy, fixed computers is not a very bright one. But that’s not a conclusion that should be drawn with confidence.

Still Needed:

Even though desktop sales are reducing, that only tells half the story. There are roles that desktop PCs play and that cannot be replicated as efficiently by any other gadget. Case in point is creating a large spreadsheet. While a tablet has the application support, creating office documents is a cumbersome experience. The small screen size proves to be a huge deterring factor.

Desktop PCs provide the most complete media center. The flexibility of these systems to adapt to new features, support new software and allow streaming of media content means they will still be favored by those who need a  comprehensive media center. Besides, some intricate functions such as photo and video editing can only be completed flawlessly on a desktop PC.

As digital media consumption is continuing to increase, everyone needs an ample memory for storage. Smartphones and tablets may offer these in abundance, but the best of the best offer a maximum of 64GB which is only a fraction of what most people need. A desktop PC will offer more than ten times as much, with new systems offering 1TB as a standard.

And finally, desktop PCs offer a gaming platform that is dissimilar to what you get on tablets. With more robust processing power greater graphics support, more effective cooling systems, and larger screens, desktop PCs offer a more awesome gaming experience than any mobile device.
